It is easiest if you have a template on hand that you can use to orient yourself so that proportions and anatomy are also successful. It is best to take a photo, since your own dog is unlikely to have so much patience to sit still all the time.

Draw and paint dog with colored pencil

I start my dog drawing with a sketch. The basic shapes help me to outline the head, the body and the rough posture. I already set the position of the eyes and nose in it.

The next step is to work out some details, especially on the face. The guidelines are then removed and further details added. In the last step of my dog sketch, fur grains are indicated. Now the sketch has been drawn up into a drawing and will be colored on the stand.

I applied the primer with a reddish brown tone to define the basic mood or coat color of the dog. I did not simply paint the surface with a pencil, for example, but drew individual hairs line by line. This enabled me to better represent swirls in the fur and the direction of growth in general. I also used this method for the other colors or layers.

In the later course I indicated the light spots or the shine in the fur with yellow tones and worked in with dark brown tones or with black shades in order to achieve a higher contrast in the image.
